Reformer pilates has a dress code that exists for functional reasons, not aesthetic ones. Here is what you need to know.
Grip socks are mandatory
Virtually every reformer pilates studio requires grip socks — socks with rubberised dots on the sole that prevent slipping on the reformer's footbar and carriage. Some studios sell them, but bringing your own is more economical. Budget €10 to €20 for a good pair that will last hundreds of classes.
Fitted clothing works best
Wear fitted leggings or tights and a fitted top. Loose clothing can catch in the springs and straps of the reformer, which is uncomfortable and distracting. Fitted clothing also allows the instructor to see your alignment more clearly and provide better corrections.
Avoid these
- Jeans or stiff trousers — too restrictive
- Very long, loose tops — can get caught in equipment
- Jewellery — can scratch the reformer or catch on straps
- Strong perfume — a shared studio is a small space
What to bring
Most studios provide equipment including the reformer, springs, and any props used in class. Bring a water bottle, your grip socks, and a small towel if you tend to perspire. Some studios charge extra for towels.
Hair
Tie hair back if it is long. The lying-down positions used in reformer pilates make loose hair uncomfortable and distracting.
Arrive early
For your first class, arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. This gives you time to store belongings, meet the instructor, and get set up on the reformer before class begins.
