What to Wear to Reformer Pilates (The Complete Guide)

📖 3 min read By ReformerFinder 2026

Reformer pilates has a reputation for a certain aesthetic — the leggings, the sports bra, the matching set. But the truth is, what you wear matters less than you think. With one major exception.

The One Non-Negotiable: Grip Socks

Every reformer pilates studio requires grip socks — socks with rubber nubs on the sole that prevent sliding on the reformer carriage. This is both a hygiene requirement and a safety one. You will not be allowed to practice barefoot or in regular socks.

Most studios sell grip socks at reception for £5–15. You can also buy them in advance from Amazon or sports retailers — look for "pilates grip socks" or "toeless grip socks."

Tip: Toeless grip socks (with an open toe) are more popular in pilates because they give you better tactile feedback through the footbar. Either style works — it's personal preference.

What to Wear: The Basics

The reformer involves lying, sitting and kneeling in various positions, with your legs often elevated. This means you want clothing that:

  • Stays in place — nothing that rides up, falls open or requires constant adjustment
  • Is fitted but not restrictive — loose clothing can get caught in the springs
  • Breathable fabric — you will sweat, even in a low-intensity class

Best Choices for Women

  • High-waisted leggings (full length or 7/8) — the most popular choice by far
  • Fitted sports bra or crop top
  • Form-fitting tank top if you prefer coverage
  • Avoid: very loose shorts, skirts, anything with large zippers or hardware that could scratch the reformer

Best Choices for Men

  • Fitted training shorts or joggers
  • Form-fitting t-shirt or tank
  • Avoid: very baggy shorts (they can expose too much during leg exercises), heavy gym trainers

What to Bring

  • Grip socks (or buy at the studio)
  • Water bottle
  • Hair tie if applicable
  • A light layer for after class — your body temperature drops quickly post-session

What to Leave at Home

  • Heavy jewellery — rings and bracelets can scratch the reformer and get in the way
  • Strong perfume — you'll be in a small studio with other people
  • Your ego — reformer pilates has a learning curve. Beginners often find it harder than expected

Studio tip: Most reformer studios have changing facilities and lockers. You can come in your regular clothes and change there. No need to travel across the city in your workout gear.
