Reformer vs Mat Pilates: Which is Right for You?
Both are pilates. Both emphasise controlled movement, breath and core activation. But reformer and mat pilates are different experiences — and the right choice depends on your goals, budget and where you are in your fitness journey.
The Core Difference
Mat pilates uses your bodyweight on a floor mat. It's accessible, affordable and can be done anywhere — at home, in a park, in a group class. The exercises rely entirely on gravity and your own strength.
Reformer pilates uses a spring-loaded machine that adds variable resistance to every movement. This resistance can assist (making movements easier) or challenge (making them harder), depending on the spring configuration.
Which is Harder?
This depends on the exercise. Many movements that are extremely challenging on the mat become accessible on the reformer, because the springs assist your body through the range of motion. Conversely, some reformer exercises — particularly balance-intensive standing work — are more challenging than their mat equivalents.
Advanced mat pilates is generally considered harder than beginner reformer. But advanced reformer pilates is more demanding than advanced mat — the spring resistance and balance challenges reach levels that bodyweight alone cannot.
Bottom line: For most beginners, the reformer is actually more accessible than the mat — the springs help you achieve correct positions that require significant strength to hold on the mat.

Which Should You Choose?
Choose mat pilates if: you're on a tight budget, want something you can do at home, or are already relatively strong and body-aware.
Choose reformer pilates if: you're new to pilates, are recovering from injury, want more variety and challenge, or have specific postural or performance goals.
The best answer? Both. Many serious practitioners do both — reformer for the spring-loaded challenge and variety, mat for the portable practice they can do anywhere.
